ABOUT US
Tambores del Sur was born and grows in Melbourne by a group of friends who come together to represent the soul of their country: EL CANDOMBE.
Candombe is the generic name given to different dances of African origin in Uruguay and was born from the conjunction of the more than twenty African towns where slaves were brought to the region of the southern cone.
The candombe is based on African rhythms and is made with three different types of drums: the 'piano', the 'repique' and the 'chico'. These drums together are called 'tamboriles'and are made with wood at the base and dry leather named 'lonja' at the top. The 'lonja' is usually heated before playing the drum, and the drums are played with a hand and a stick.
The rhythm of this music is so strong and vibrant that it is almost impossible to sit still when you are next to the performance group playing it.
